Our History

Established in 2005 as a labor of love, The Autism Council of Rochester was founded by its volunteer executive director, Lawana Jones. As the mother of an autistic daughter, Jones soon found that the Rochester community severely lacked the support services and programs her daughter and other ASD children needed to make the transition from high school to the adult community. In an effort to assist ASD children, offer support to families and advocate on their behalf, Jones created the council. The Autism Council of Rochester ultimately seeks to bridge the gap between the end of special education programs and the entrance into society for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

What We Do

The Autism-Friendly Community designation provided by The Autism Council, provides FREE training and support to Municipalities, Town Employees, Officials, Recreation Departments, Volunteers, First Responders including Law Enforcement, Schools, Day Care Centers, and Businesses to help the public understand and support individuals on the Autism Spectrum and their families.

In addition, local businesses are provided an opportunity to gain the "Autism-Friendly® Business" designation, and are provided with a window decal that can be displayed to show the company has provided autism awareness to a predetermined number of their employees.  The business is also added to The Autism-Friendly App for Android or Apple phones.  The App is provided to families in the local area searching for any Autism-Friendly Businesses.
